Five Stories I Love Meme: On the battle lines is probably the pinnacle of my stories. (Ny, with reason, called this the Saga of Slade.) This is the story I put the most into, this is My Slade. Every other Slade story I write will probably be expanding on a point I made here, or going into a time in his life I didn't mention, but this story is the height of who my Slade is.
I wrote it in five feverish hours, typing into a chatbox, and then spent weeks editing.
Language, the atmosphere is the first Joey fic I wrote. I was trying to write a Wilson story that wouldn't scare Gloss, and at the same time elaborate on pieces of Joey that I think tends to be forgotten: he was fighting at his mother's side long before he became a Titan, and he's good at it. Joey's gentle, but that doesn't make him weak, and he enjoys battle. Joseph Wilson is *dangerous*.
I feel like I made mistakes with
My familiar ghost again, like I was a tad too clumsy with the language, but it says exactly what I wanted it to say about Stephanie, about Jason, and about how Bruce reacts to Even Robins. It makes me happy, in a pained kind of way.
With your shield or on it was written before I had the (small) amount of information on Slade's childhood that canon gives us. Turns out it doesn't work with Slade's history at all, but I still love the character I created and I still think it makes sense for who Slade is. It's wrong, but it isn't *wrong*.
More precious was the light is the Adeline of my *soul*, proud and strong and dangerous and sternly in love. I wrote this story before I read much of DEATHSTROKE, but the characterization I had here still holds true for me. I believe very firmly in the plausibility of the universe I sketched out in this story, and I still love the title.
There are other stories I've written I madly adore -- if I thought series were permitted, the
Kali series would definitely be here -- among them several Bruce/Jason ficlets and some Dick stories. But these five are the stories that ring truest for those characters, where I think I did the best work.
