Title: Each with a ghost
Summary: Wintergreen has his own ideas about Slade and Robin.
Author's Notes: Title from Love.
Another story from between the pages of When nobody else is looking.

Of all the mistakes I have watched Slade make, taking in Robin is, perhaps, the largest. He is skilled, obviously, as anyone who survives Gotham must be. Driven, ruthless with himself.

I would say that he perhaps reminds Slade of himself as a child, except that Slade was never quite so young.

In truth, Grayson reminds me of no one so much as Grant. Far less bitter, of course, but his cold anger at the murder of Batman may in the end prove more to Slade's undoing than any of Grant's misplaced rage.

Slade Wilson is my friend, and I would not wish harm to him for all the world, but I cannot help but hope that when Robin is ready -- for what, I have only theories, and I have yet to ask for confirmation -- he will leave.

Slade very clearly cares for the boy. Truthfully, that is my most pressing concern -- I have not seen Slade so at ease since the early days of his marriage with Adeline. That relationship could at best be described as having ended poorly, and I am not certain that Slade could survive having what I must dubiously describe as his happiness shattered a second time.

-- Excerpt from the journal of W. R. Wintergreen, Major, British Army, Ret.

I love the Wintergreen voice. So formal and ... butlery!

:D Wintergreen was raised wealthy. It shows. I'm glad you liked it!

*hearts* So... So *british*. In all the terrifying senses of the word. *g* The things he sees and hints at are the scariest of them all.

*ahahahahaha* British like ALFRED. (It is part of My Canon that Wintergreen and Alfred knew each other. Alfred was in MI5, right? Or am I making that up?)

The things he sees and hints at are the scariest of them all.

This is the guy who, in canon, knew Slade and Tara were sleeping together and, while he made his disapproval clear, did *absolutely nothing* to dissuade either of them. He might not like Slade and Dick, but he won't do anything in this 'verse, either.

Alfred was in MI5, right? Or am I making that up?

We have comics canon (dunno if it still is) of him teaching surveillance and disguises, and doing one field op just before going to work for the Waynes. And in this continuity his real name isn't Pennyworth. *g*

In B:TAS he must have been higher up than that, because he knew important security codes that were relevant decades later.

Oh, good, then my canon can still work. Wintergreen was MI5, they could totally have known each other.

I love the gentle way in which this says, "Slade has son issues. Grayson has major daddy issues. And they're in love."

I truly do.

:D :D :D They *are*, and Wintergreen -- being a smart man and not an "incurable optimist" like Slade (ahahahaha. Ahahahaha. Ahaha. Oh canon.) -- is busy going "Why am I the only one who thinks this will end badly?"

*smooshes Dick and Slade together*

Oh, man, Wintergreen. I don't think I want to spend to much time thinking about how that feels, looking at this relationship from where he is. Damn.

He is *so jealous*. It would be easier if Slade were just sleeping with the pretty jailbait, but *no*. He's *fond*. Poor Wintergreen.

Truly, the most fucked-up bits, they lie in what Wintergreen tactfully rephrases for the sake of his own convictions.

Oh, Wintergreen. ♥

I don't think they've actually had sex yet? Because Dick hasn't finished becoming Tiercel yet. But it's coming and everybody *but* Dick knows it and Wintergreen is in deep, deep denial. Poor man. He's so in love.

(This is me, never getting over canon quietly, pointedly saying 'Yeah, you know how Wintergreen is totally a ladies' man and flirts with everyone in a skirt and sleeps around? He's also gay for Slade. Watch us skirt the line of subtext!')

Lovely. You have an excellent Wintergreen voice for the 'journal entry' here.

Thank you! He just kind of went to my brain and was all 'Fic? No, I don't think so. Journal entry, that's a good girl.' and I went '... okay!'

In a lot of ways, this is similar to how I'd probably write Alfred, all formal and precise and careful, only he'd be even *more* circumspect.
